Recently Azure Storage team announced a new kind of storage account – “Blob Storage” Account. As the name indicates, these storage accounts only support blob service (Block Blobs & Append Blobs). I am pleased to inform you that we have included support for this kind of storage account in Cloud Portam in the latest release. In this blog post I will talk about these enhancements.
Summary of Enhancements
- Manage blob storage accounts
- Manage data in “Blob Storage” accounts
Manage “Blob Storage” Accounts
By managing “Blob Storage” accounts I mean the functionality to perform management related operations on this kind of account. It includes create/update/delete accounts as well as changing the access tier. While most of the functionality for managing this kind of storage accounts is same as your regular storage accounts, there are two features which are different and I will only talk about these in this post. For other operations, I would strongly encourage you to read this blog post: http://blog.cloudportam.com/cloud-portam-updates-managing-azure-storage-accounts/ where we talked about managing storage accounts in your Azure Subscription using Cloud Portam.
We have made it super easy for you to create a “Blob Storage” kind of account. On the storage account creation popup window, you just have to select the kind of storage account (default is regular storage account). Also please note that “Blob Storage” account has two access tiers – Hot (for frequently accessed data) and Cool (for not frequently accessed data). When creating the storage account, you would also need to specify the access tier as well.
That’s all you needed to do to create a “Blob Storage” account.
Change “Blob Storage” Account Access Tier
As mentioned above, a “Blob Storage” account is available in 2 access tiers – Hot and Cool. I am pleased to inform you that you can change access tier for a “Blob Storage” account using Cloud Portam.
To change the access tier for a “Blob Storage” account, simply select the storage account and then select “Access Tier” from either the context menu or top button bar as shown below.
One the popup that is shown subsequently, simply change the access tier by selecting appropriate value from the dropdown. As changing access tier could result in additional charges, we have provided a simple CAPTCHA to confirm your action.
Once you do that, your access tier will be changed to the new type immediately.
Please note that changing access tier is backed by Azure Role-based Access Control (RBAC), thus you will only be able to perform this operation if you have appropriate permissions.
Manage Data In “Blob Storage” Accounts
Managing data in “Blob Storage” accounts is no different than managing data in regular storage accounts. Only difference is that only blob service is supported for these storage accounts. Since in Cloud Portam we ask you to connect to your storage accounts using account name/key and we have no knowledge about the kind of storage account you’re using, we ask you to tell us the storage account kind so that we can customize the view for you and enable/disable functionality accordingly.
Telling us about the kind of storage account is as easy as selecting appropriate value from a dropdown as shown below.
Once you do that, we will present you with the services applicable to the kind of storage account you have specified.
For example, here’s a screenshot of what you would see for a “Blob Storage” account (please notice how all other services except blob service are not clickable).
and here’s a screenshot of what you would see for a “Regular” storage account.
Other than that there’re no changes as far as managing blob containers and blobs are concerned. You will have full blob management functionality available to you for both kind of storage accounts.
There are a number of things in our immediate product pipeline. We will continue enhancing our Subscription management features by adding support for managing additional services. So stay tuned for all these changes.
