Over this weekend we released a new version of Cloud Portam. In this release we made some storage service management and resource groups enhancements. In this blog post, I will talk about the changes we have done.

Summary of Enhancements

  • Storage service management changes.
  • Resource group enhancements.

Storage Service Management Changes

Support for Storage Service Encryption at REST

Recently during Build conference, Azure Storage Team announced preview of Storage Service Encryption at REST. Essentially this service will store the data in encrypted format in your storage. Encryption and decryption of data will be handled transparently by Azure Storage Service.

I am pleased to announce that using Cloud Portam you can manage this feature on your storage accounts. There are a few things I would like to mention here:

  • Currently this service is in preview and is only available in a few Azure regions (East Asia for Standard storage accounts and Japan East for Premium storage accounts at the time of writing of this blog post).
  • By default this service is disabled in your Azure Subscription. Before using this subscription, you must enable it first. Please visit this link on instructions on how to enable it in your Azure Subscription: https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/articles/storage-service-encryption/#registering-for-preview.
  • This service is only enabled for new storage accounts provisioned using Azure Resource Manager (ARM). It is not available for existing ARM storage accounts as well as classic storage accounts.

Create storage account

Cloud Portam makes it super easy for you to create a storage account with encryption enabled. On the create storage account popup, simply check the checkbox which reads “Enable Storage Service Encryption”. That’s all it takes to create a storage account with encryption at REST feature enabled.

Enable/disable encryption at REST

Cloud Portam makes it super simple to enable/disable encryption at REST for existing storage accounts (provided they meet the conditions specified above). Simply select the storage account for which you want to manage encryption either through context menu or via the button bar as shown below.

If the encryption is not enabled, you can enable the encryption using the popup window that gets displayed as shown below.

If the encryption is enabled, you can disable the encryption using the popup window that gets displayed as shown below.

Please note that enabling/disabling storage service encryption is backed by role-based access control (RBAC), thus you will only be able to perform these operations if you have permissions to do so.

Classic and ARM Storage Accounts Separated

With this version we’re separating management of Classic and ARM storage accounts in separate screens. This was done in light of all the new enhancements done only in ARM storage accounts making things simpler for everyone to manage these storage accounts.

Resource Group Enhancements

During Build conference, Azure team also announced the new functionality of exporting a resource group and a resource group deployment in JSON format. I am pleased to announce that we have included this functionality in Cloud Portam in this release.

Export Resource Group

To export a resource group, simply select the resource group and then select “Export…” option from the context menu or the button bar as shown below.

On the subsequent screen, specify the export parameters:

Resource group will be exported in JSON format and displayed to you. If you wish, you can download this as a file on your local machine.

Export Deployment Template

Similarly you can export a deployment template using Cloud Portam.

If you wish, you can download this as a file on your local machine.

What’s Next

There are a number of things in our immediate product pipeline. We will continue enhancing our Subscription management features by adding support for managing additional services. So stay tuned for all these changes.
